- This work demonstrated the effect of Ag nanoparticles incorporation on the antibacterial performance of the coating layer on Ti-6Al-4V alloy via plasma electrolytic oxidation. For this purpose, the PEO coatings were carried out at current density of 100 mA/cm2 for 300 sec under AC condition in a phosphate electrolyte containing four different concentrations of silver particles, i.e., 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 g/l. With increasing concentration of silver powder in the electrolyte, it was clearly found that the porosity on the surface remarkably decreased. It is attributed to the silver nanoparticles in the plasma bubble which shows electro-conductivity. Based on the EDS analysis, the amount of silver element in the coating layers increased with the increase of silver nanoparticle concentration. However, the antibacterial tests seemingly revealed similar results of all samples, indicating that the existence of silver in the coating layer is more significant than how much silver ions was incorporated. According to the cell proliferation tests, the coating layer from the 0.1 g/l showed the highest values among the samples due to the porous surface with suitable pore size (~3 μm). In conclusion, the coating layer from the 0.1 g/l was biologically superior to the other samples.
