dc.description.abstract | The purpose of the present randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study was to investigate the hypothesis that supplementation of rice bran fermented with Lentinus edodes (rice bran exo-biopolymer, RBEP) containing arabinoxylan enhanced natural killer (NK) cell activity and modulated cytokines in healthy adults. Eighty healthy participants with white blood cells of 4,000-8,000/μL were randomly assigned to take six capsules a day of either 3g RBEP or 3g placebo for 8 weeks. Three participants in placebo group were dropped out, and no severe adverse effects were reported. Supplementation of RBEP significantly (P=0.012) increased interferon (IFN)-γ level as compared with placebo group. However, RBEP supplementation had no significant effects on NK cell activity and concentrations of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-10, IL-12, and tumor necrosis factor-α as compared with placebo. The present study suggested that supplementation of RBEP increased IFN-γ secretion without significant adverse effects, and thus may be beneficial to healthy individuals. This new rice bran derived product may have potential use in the formation of solid and liquid functional food for treatment and prevention of pathological state associated with immune response. | - |
