dc.description.abstractThe more advanced that mobile devices have become, the more affordable and available they have become as well with a variety of functions. In particular, the capability of the onboard GPS (Global Positioning System) makes them devices ideal for location determination to enable a location-based system to deliver location-aware mobile applications or services, such as maps and navigation. However, continuous location sensing using GPS sensor consumes a high amount of energy in mobile devices. Therefor, this system places a burden on battery life, requiring more frequent recharging. Fortunately, users respond to traffic signs themselves and do not always rely on navigation systems before navigation choices are required; hence, continuous GPS signals reception is not necessary. On the basis of this observation, we propose two location-based energy-efficient navigation methods for reducing the frequency of unnecessary GPS signal reception during inactive routing intervals. First, we use an acceleration sensor to reduce GPS sensor energy consumption, Using this acceleration sensor, the system can calculate the remaining distance to an intersection and receiving satellite signals at only the intersection by the GPS sensor to obtain updated location information. Extensive simulation suggests that power consumption will decrease by approximately 22.2% compared to the existing GPS reception method. Second, we receive satellite signals periodically to reduce GPS sensor energy consumption. An overall evaluation of our system shows that energy consumption is reduced by approximately 47%.-
