Abstract

This study aims to identify the current state of performing oxygen therapy throuh the evaluation of nursing practice of hospital nurses and to provide basic data for efficient educational methods of oxygen therapy that will help clinical nurses improve their nursing practice. This study involved nurses working in five hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. Data were collected from Dec. 15, 2013 to Jan. 10, 2014 via a structured questionnaire on oxygen therapy; 161 nurses responded to the questionnaire. As for an evaluation tool of oxygen therapy, an evaluation tool of the application of the nursing process for oxygen therapy developed by Kim et al.(2013) was used. Nurses showed high-level performance on oxygen therapy if (1)they graduated from community colleges, (2)thery were working in wards with 500 to 999 beds, (3)they were working in internal medicine, (4)they rocognize the necessity of an evaluation tool of oxygen therapy. In addition, nurses showed high-level performance on oxygen therapy and tried to improve patient safety if they had learning experience according to guidelines for oxygen therapy and had been through a performance evaluation before. This study demonstrates that diverse factors are influencing hospital nurses' performance on oxygen therapy. The current state of hospital nurses' performance on oxygen therapy can be identified by using an evaluation tool of the application on the nursing process for oxygen therapy which can monitor the quality of nursing care and can be used as basic data for departmental self-evaluation. Nursing guidelines and educational programs designed to provide education for oxygen therapy to perform oxygen therapy efficiently and safely are desperately needed.
