Realization of Morton Subotnick's <PASSAGES OF THE BEAST> using technology by Max

Abstract

This thesis is a realization of the ghost works <Passages of the beast> (1978) by Morton Subotnick, based on the technology of Max software. This realization is the technologies in Max break the technical limitation of ghost box and provide more possibilities of the performance of electronic music.|본 논문은 미국 작곡가 모턴 수보트닉 (Morton Subotnick) 본인이 개발한 소리신호처리 (sound processing) 하드웨어인 고스트 박스 (ghost box) 로 작곡한 전자음악 작품인 클라리넷 독주와 전자음향을 위한 <PASSAGES OF THE BEAST>에서 사용된 전자음악 테크놀로지를 연구한 논문이다. 필자는 본 작품에서 사용된 전자음악관련 기술을 연구하여 고스트 박스가 갖는 장비 제약과 공간 제약에서 벗어날 수 있도록 객체지향 음악 언어 프로그램인 Max 로 진폭 변조 (amplitude modulation), 링 모듈레이션 (ring modulation), 공간 위치 (panorama locator), 주파수 장치 (frequency shifter) 네 부분으로 나누어 고스트 박스 시스템의 기술적인 전환을 시도하였다.; This thesis is a realization of the ghost works <Passages of the beast> (1978) by Morton Subotnick, based on the technology of Max software.
