장호의 시극운동에 관한 연구

Abstract

이 논문은 장호의 시극운동에 대한 연구이다. 특히 1950년대 후반부터 1960년대 후반기까지 약 10년간 한국 시극의 발전을 위해 열정을 바친 그의 업적에 대해 고찰한 것이다. 연구 결과, 한국시극사에 남긴 그의 주요 업적을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 그는 한국시극사가 형성되는 초창기에 사회적 혼란기로 인한 긴 공백기를 깨고 산문(1957. 8)과 작품(1958. 8)을 잇달아 발표하여 단절 위기를 막아내고 시극사의 흐름을 이어주었다. 둘째, 그는 시극을 새로운 종합예술로 규정하고 현대 시와 연극의 문제점을 동시에 극복할 수 있는 대안으로서 조직적인 시극운동을 펼쳤다. 셋째, 그는 시극의 공연에 많은 관심을 가지고 직접 작품을 창작하여 최초로 라디오 방송을 통한 실험과 무대 공연을 실현했다. 넷째, 그는 최초로 4막의 장편 시극 <수리뫼>를 창작하고 공연하여 시극도 단독으로 공연할 수 있다는 가능성을 확인 하였다. 이러한 장호의 시극운동의 결실은 거의 100년에 가까운 한국시극사에서 가장 빛나는 업적으로 기록될 수 있다.

This paper is a study on Jang Ho"s Poetic Drama Movement. In particular, he considered his achievements that devoted his passion for the development of Korean Poetic Drama for about 10 years from the late 1950s to the late 1960s. The major achievements of his works in Korean Poetic Drama History can be summarized as follows. First, he broke the long vacancy due to the social turmoil in the early days of the formation of Korean Poetic Drama History and prose (1957.8) and works (1958.8) The series of announcements to prevent the crisis of disconnection and to continue the flow of the Poetic Drama History. Second, he defined the Poetic Drama as a new comprehensive art and organized the Poetic Drama Movement as an alternative to overcome the problems of modern poetry and drama at the same time. Third, he created his own works with much interest in the Poetic Drama Performance, and realized the experiment and stage performance through radio broadcasting for the first time. Fourth, he confirmed the possibility that the Poetic Drama can be performed alone by creating and performing the feature length Surimoi (<수리뫼>) of the 4th act for the first time. The fruits of this Jang Ho"s Poetic Drama Movement can be recorded as the brightest achievement in Korean Poetic Drama History for nearly 100 years.
