In the present work, the design optimization of the monolithic catalytic converter has been numerically performed to minimize the light-off time(the time required for 50% conversion of exhaust gas) of the catalyst with design variables such as cell density, monolith length and radius and wall thickness using Micro Genetic Algorithm(μ-GA). The catalytic converter is modeled based on one-channel theory which considers four chemical processes on the washcoat layer, heat conduction in the channel wall and convection heat transfer between the wall and gas. The transient behavior of the automobile catalytic converters has been studied using a mathematical model which accounts for the simultaneous process of heat transfer, mass transfer and chemical reaction.en_US
