영화 속 타임머신의 출현과 시간 이동의 체험, 그 낙관주의적 상상력 : ˂백 투 더 퓨처˃ 시리즈를 통해

Abstract

본 논문은 미국 할리우드에서 제작된 ˂백 투 더 퓨처˃ 시리즈에 초점을 맞추어, 영화 속 타임머신의 출현과 시간 이동의 체험이 어떠한 낙관주의적 상상력을 통해 어떻게 구현되고 있는지를 고찰한 연구의 결과물이다. 총 3편으로 만들어진 ˂백 투 더 퓨처˃ 시리즈에서 보는 이의 이목을 사로잡는 대상은 다름 아닌 ‘타임머신’이다. 영화는 타임머신을 개발한 브라운 박사와 여기에 승차한 고등학생 마티를 주요 인물로 설정하고 미국의 한 중소 도시를 배경으로 하여 시간의 제약을 초월한 그들의 여정을 선보인다. 또한, 이를 통해 여타 할리우드 영화에서처럼 권선징악 식의 윤리적 입장을 견지한다. 물론 그 과정에서 타임머신 작동과 관련된 기술적 한계로 인한 난관과 테크놀로지를 악용하(려)는 인간의 욕망에 의한 위험성이 노출되기도 하지만, 영화는 주인공들에게 그 이상의 유익함을 내놓으며 도전과 정의의 가치를 강조한다. 그리고 이와 같은 테크놀로지에 대한 유토피아적 이상(理想)의 저변에는 영화 제작 당시인 1980년대에 팽배해 있던 자유주의와 실용주의로 대표되는 미국적 가치와 공간, 역사, 대중문화를 망라하는 다양한 미국의 문화적 요소가 자리한다. I studied how time travel experience through the time machine was represented and what kind of optimistic world view was implemented in the 'Back to the Future' series produced in Hollywood. Definitely, it is a time machine that captures the audience’s attention in three series of ‘Back to the Future’. In these movies, Dr. Brown who developed a time machine, and Marty who is a high school student set out on a journey transcending time in a small city in America. Also, through their journey, these films take the ethical attitude of encouraging good and punishing evil like other Hollywood movies. Of course, main characters face some difficulties resulted from the technological limitations of time machine operation and the desire of the wicked to abuse technology. However, these films emphasize the value of challenge and justice by showing benefits from technology over the risks. And, there are American values represented by liberalism-pragmatism and American cultural elements including space, history and popular culture which had been widespread in the 1980s behind the utopian ideal in the movies.
