류큐왕국의 ‘일본 은폐’ 정책과 표류민 송환

Abstract

This paper conclusively affirms that the Ryukyu Kingdom’s dichotomous and simultaneous adoption of both China’s political system and Japan’s government system is to be seen as a “historical idiosyncrasy” characteristic of that Kingdom. Through the example of the repatriation of Chosun castaways who landed in Ryukyu in 1733 to China, this paper seeks to reveal how this dual system adopted by the Ryukyu Kingdom impacted international relations throughout Far-East Asia. Moreover, this paper shows how this dual system led to the Ryukyu Kingdom’s concealment policy of Japan through an examination of how the castaways, confined in the Tomari, were absolutely restricted from exposure to Japanese traditions and how those accompanying the castaways to China were strictly forbidden to mention Japanese traditions to the castaways. Finally, this paper explores the reasons behind the Ryukyu Kingdom’s concealment policy concerning Japan and reaches the conclusion that Japan itself had been, in fact, aware of such fiction. 1614년 전국적인 ‘기리시탄 금교령’이 내려지자 사제들은 잠복 사목 활동을 하다가 추방되거나 순교 당하게 된다. 특히 한 사람의 사제도 없는 상황에서 금교령이 해제될 때까지 신자들 스스로 비밀 조직을 만들어 세례를 비롯한 여러 가지 의식(儀式)과 교리, 기도문 등을 세대를 거듭하여 전승해 온 자들이 있는데 이들을 가리켜 ‘잠복 기리시탄’이라 하고 그 기간을 잠복시대(1644-1873)라 한다. 본고는 기리시탄시대(1549-1644)의 혼인성사가 잠복시대에도 전승되어 왔는가에 대한 고찰이다. 통혼(通婚)에도 불구하고 비밀 신앙 공동체가 유지된 이유는 주로 공동체 내혼(內婚)이었기 때문임을 알 수 있다. 또한 사료를 통하여 살펴본 결과 기리시탄 상당수에서 혼인성사가 이루어지고 있다. 다만 장기적인 사제의 부재와 지속적인 탄압의 영향으로 변용이 나타나기도 하지만, 1873년 해금(解禁)을 맞아 기적적으로 교회로 돌아온 자도 많다.
