Recently, because of global warming, bulk jellyfish began to appear along internal coasts as water temperatures continue to increase. Under this situation, researches regarding the industrial application plan of jellyfish are being actively conducted. The collagen extracted from jellyfish is an expected alternative source for mammalian collagen. Therefore, in this study, pepsin-solubilized collagen (PSC) was extracted from dried Nomurai jellyfish (Nemopilema nomurai) by using gamma-ray irradiation. The gamma-ray irradiation step was added to break the extracellular matrix in connective tissue to improve the extraction yields of collagen. The volume of filtrate and precipitate after extraction process increased with increasing the irradiation dose. Amino acid composition analysis of extracted pepsin solubilized collagen showed that amino acid composition ratio was different from those of mammalian collagen. The surface structure of extracted collagen was confirmed by SEM analysis. It was observed that as the irradiation dose increased, the fragment forming the collagen thinned. The PSC was analyzed using FT-IR to detect functional groups of protein. SDS-PAGE analysis confirmed that the radiation energy caused the protein to become low molecular weight.. As a result of DPPH activity test, collagen extracted by irradiation showed higher antioxidant activity. It was confirmed that there was no toxicity of collagen extracted by CCK-8 assay. It was found that the collagen added with the irradiation step had no change in the amino acid composition and chemical structure and became low molecular weight in terms of molecular weight.-
