Abstract
This research treats the optimization of the material arrangement. To improve fuel efficiency and driving performance and to reduce production costs, an effort to reduce the weight of a vehicle has been steadily tried in automotive industry. Since the weight of BIW takes up a large portion of the total weight of a vehicle, reducing the weight of BIW greatly contributes to reducing the total weight of a vehicle. In this research, we formulate a design problem to minimize the weight of the BIW while satisfying design requirements about bending and torsional stiffness and establish a Metamodel-based design optimization strategy to solve the design problem. As a result of the optimization, we obtain weight reduction by 46.9% while satisfying all design requirements.
