‘두려운 낯설음’과 ‘경이’로서의 사유기계 - 퀘이형제 애니메이션 중심으로

Abstract

서구 예술에서 인간의 ‘무의식’에 관한 문제는 ‘합리성’과 ‘이성’을 기반으로 했던 근대를 부정하면서 출발하였다. 20C 초반 ‘다다’라는 예술운동은 이러한 서구의 문화예술계에서 일어난 반 합리적, 반이성주의 표출이라 할 수 있다. 프로이드의 정신분석학이나 초현실주의 또한 이러한 시대적 흐름과 서구문화의 변화 속에서생겨난 것이다. 본 연구는 이러한 개념들이 오늘날 우리시대의 시각문화에서, 특히 애니메이션 분야에서 어떻게 표출되고 있는지를 살펴보는데 초점을 맞추었다. 퀘이형제(Quay Brothers)의 작품에 나타난 특징들을 지그문트 프로이드(Sigmund Freud)의 ‘두려운 낯설음 (Unheimlich)’과 초현실주의의 ‘경이(Marvelous)’와 결부시켜 분석해 봄으로써 작품의 불가해한 내용을 이해하는 단초를 제공하고자 한다. 특히 초현실주의 ‘경이’의 개념은 ‘발작적 아름다움’과 ‘객관적 우연’을 통해 설명되고 있는데, 이는 프로이드의 ‘두려운 낯설음’를 유발시키는 트라우마의 원형, ‘거세불안’과 ‘반복충동’에 개념적 공통점을 가진다. 이러한 ‘무의식’에 관한 탐구들이 우리시대의 예술작품들 속에서 어떻게 시각화 되었는지 추적해 보는 일은 유의미한 일일 것이다. 연구방법으로는 ‘두려운 낯설음’과 ‘경이’의 관련 문헌을 1차 연구 자료로 삼았다. 덧붙여 선행 연구와 그 외 출판물들, 비평적 자료 등을 보조 텍스트로 참고하였다.

작품 분석결과, 퀘이형제의 80년대의 대표적인 두 작품을 관통하고 있는 주제와 시각적 표현이 ‘두려운 낯설음’과 ‘경이’의 개념에 기반하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었으며, 이런 점에서 퀘이형제의 영상 작업은 20C 초, 초현실주의와 프로이드가 주창했던 ‘무의식‘에 대한 현대판 영상 보고서라 할 수 있다.;This study is an intention to analyze a message which passes through the center of the animations of the Quay Brothers through applying an “Uncanny” conception of Sigmund Freud to the movie. This paper first looks at the contents of “Das Unheimliche(The Uncanny)” and analyses what differences are between Freud’s “Uncanny” and surrealistic “Marvelous” and analyzing visual features of animation based on these two theories. The Main method of this article is to analyze the books and periodicals about two theories. Additionally, literatures including precedent studies, other publications and critics would be taken as a second text. The concept of “Marvelous” comprising a part of the basis of surrealistic aesthetics is explained by “Convulsive Beauty” and “Objective Chance.” It associates the prototype of a trauma which induces Freud’s “Unheimliche.” It is significant to analyze how those explorations on “unconsciousness” are visualized in The Quey Brothers’ animation According to the analysis of the works, it has been found that the theme and visual expressions penetrating and are based on the concept of “Unheimliche” and “Marvelous”. In this point, they can be said to be the modern-version cinematic report of “unconsciousness” that was advocated by surrealism and Freud in the beginning of the 20th century.
