형태재인 관점에서의 아이콘의 특징적 분류 연구

Abstract

오늘날 디지털 멀티미디어(Digital Multimedia) 환경에서 아이콘(Icon)은 사용자 인터페이스(User Interface)를 통한 사용자 간 커뮤니티를 원활하게 하는 가장 중요하고 기본적인 시각 언어이다. 아이콘은 문자를 대신하여 아이콘을 통해 전달하려는 의미를 효과적으로 전달하는 것이 가장 중요한 특징이다. 이를 위해서는 아이콘을 시각적으로 지각하고 인지하는 과정의 효율화가 반드시 필요하며 시지각 인지 과정의 핵심인 형태를 인지하는 과정, 즉 형태재인의 연구가 필요한 것이다. 형태재인을 연구함으로써 형태를 인식하는 인간의 가장 기초가 되는 형태구성요소를 파악하고 아이콘을 디자인 하는데 있어 이러한 형태재인의 특성을 접목한다면, 아이콘 본연의 기능인 정보전달의 기능에 있어 가장 효과적인 수단이 될 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구에서는 선행연구 고찰을 통해 시대에 따른 아이콘의 개념 및 역할의 변화, 이에 따라 정보교류의 매체체로서 아이콘이 가지는 형태적 특성을 연구하였다. 또한 형태의 구성요소와 형태를 시각적으로 인지하는 과정인 형태재인의 3가지 이론을 고찰, 둘 사이의 상관관계와 특성을 분석하고 이러한 특성을 정보전달을 위한 아이콘의 기능적 특성에 접목하여 아이콘 형태를 재인하는데 있어 각각의 기초구성단위인 형태구성요소 추출하여 단순화와 맥락화를 통한 메타포 형성이라는 공통분모를 추출하였다. 이를 기준으로 현재 아이콘의 사용이 가장 활발한 디지털미디어 콘텐츠의 필수 기능 아이콘을 형태와 맥락에 따른 아이콘을 분류, 분석하여 사용자의 행위 유발을 위해 현상이나 행위의 직접적인 형태 표현이 적합한 정보와 추상적이고 관념적인 정보 메타포 형성에 적합한 정보에 적합한 아이콘 형태를 제안하여 아이콘의 효율적인 정보전달을 위한 형태재인 관점에서의 접근 및 분류 필요성을 확인하였다.;In today`s environment of digital multimedia, the icon is the most important and fundamental visual language which facilitates communication between users through the user interface using graphics. The icon is a code whose most important feature is to effectively convey the intended meaning through icon in substitution for letters. If, by studying pattern recognition, pattern components which are the most basic element in human awareness of a pattern are identified and such characteristic of pattern recognition is applied in designing the icon, the result may be the most effective method in terms of information delivery function, icon`s primary objective. In this study, a common denomiator which is the formation of a metaphor by way of simplification and contextualization through extracting each basic element unit or pattern components in terms of recognizing the icon pattern was derived by considering the visual perception and cognition process through a pattern recognition study and applying such characteristics to the functional feature of an icon for information communication purpose. In addition, by classifying and analyzing icons in terms of patterns and contexts based on the findings, a new direction for visual expressions for efficient information communication is offered by suggesting appropriate icon patterns for information which is suitable for directly expressing phenomena or actions to trigger user`s actions and creating abstract and ideal information metaphors.
