캘리그래피를 활용한 한글 서체 표현유형 연구

Abstract

캘리그래피는 아름다움과 신선한 감동을 주는 표현력이 강한 글자체이다. 전달하려는 문화적 메세지와 특성에 따라 표현될 수 있는 캘리그래피의 기능과 영역은 무한하다고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 현존하고 있는 전통서체들과 현재 쓰이고 있는 한글 서체(폰트)와 캘리그래피의 표현유형을 분류하고 그것이 어떻게 변형되어 사용되고 새롭게 표현되고 있는지 연구하고자 한다. 사용범위는 캘리그래피 중 한글에 한하였으며, 역사적인 배경을 기반으로 현재까지 이루어진 캘리그래피의 유형을 분류하는데 있어서 필법의 의한 서체 분류로 제한한다.

캘리그래피 표현 유형의 전통필법 서체는 원방각이 뚜렷하며 획의 굵기가 일정하고 장중한 무거운 느낌을 준다. 이 서체는 전통적인 내용을 목적으로 하는 매체에 사용되고 있으나 주목성이 높지 못한 관계로 널리 사용되고 있지는 않다. 전통서체를 변형한 서체는 전통적인 한글서체의 기반 위에 각진 부분의 획을 굴려 부드럽게 표현하거나 획의 굵기 변화를 주어 주목성을 강조한다. 이는 주로 시각적 비주얼이 큰 분야에서 많이 사용되어지며, 역동적이고 강한 표현이 그 특징이라 할 수 있다. 독창적 서체는 획을 자유롭게 사용하여 장식적인 미를 주고, 불안정한 획과 스크래치를 줘서 재질감을 느끼는 독특한 서체미를 나타낸다. 이처럼 캘리그래피 디자인이 다양한 분야에서 관심이 증가하고 있는 것은 디자인의 기본이 되는 문자가 의미전달 기능 뿐 아니라 예술표현의 기능으로서 역할을 하게 되었음을 보여주고 있다.;Calligraphy is a very expressive font style that gives a sense of beauty and fresh impression. There are unlimited functions and the range of calligraphic expressions since it can be expressed as appropriate for the literary messages and characteristics. Therefore, this study aims to classify the expression styles of existing traditional fonts and currently used Hangeul fonts and calligraphy and examine how these styles were modified for use in novel expressive ways. The range of calligraphy usage was limited to Hangeul and the classification of calligraphy that have been in existence based on historical background was limited to the classification of hand-written styles. Among the calligraphic expression styles, the traditional hand-written styles are characterized by their similarity to by their distinct circular, rectangular and sharp angles, uniform thickness of strokes and solemness of impression. Although these styles are used in the media that carry traditional contents but their low capacity of drawing attentions limits them from wide usage. The modified fonts from the traditional fonts are basically the traditional Hangeul fonts but angluar parts are smoothed out with curved strokes and varied thickness of strokes are applied to emphasize attention drawing function. Each creative font has unique calligraphic charm using free strokes to render it an ornamental effect and unstable strokes and scratches to add a sense of texture. The fact that there is a growing interest in calligraphy design in a wide vareity of fields indicates that the characters, the basic objects of design, not only function as the conveyors of meaning but now also play the role of an artistic expression function.
