Verification of the Information Privately Owned by a Principal

Abstract

We study a principal-agent relationship in which the information privately

owned by a principal is subject to verification by an uninformed agent. The agent's

information verification effort, however, is unverifiable(non-contractible). Therefore, the

agent may accuse the truthful principal without verifying the reported information. The

principal, in equilibrium, misreports with strictly positive probability to induce the agent

to verify the reported information. Moreover, the principal designs the contract such that

it is terminated when her misreport is discovered by the agent. Termination of the

contract occurs with strictly positive probability on the equilibrium path.;본 논문은 대리인이 주인의 사적정보를 확인하기 위해 해당 정보를 수집할 수 있는 경우의 주인-대리인 모형을 분석한다. 주인은 대리인으로 하여금 자신의 사적정보를 확인하도록 하여 자신의 정보왜곡 인센티브 문제를 완화할 수 있다. 그러나 대리인의 정보수집활동이 주인이나 제3자에 의해 관찰될 수 없는 경우 대리인은 정보수집 없이 주인이 정보를 왜곡하였다고 주장할 수도 있다. 따라서 주인은 대리인의 정보수집을 유인하기 위해 균형에서 양(+)의 확률로 정보를 왜곡하는 한편, 자신의 정보왜곡이 발각되었을 때 계약이 해지되도록 계약을 설계한다. 결국 균형에서 양(+)의 확률로 계약해지가 발생하며, 이 점이 본 논문의 가장 흥미로운 결과이다. 계약이 해지되도록 함으로써 주인은 자신이 정보를 왜곡하여 얻을 수 있는 이익을 최소화할 수 있으며, 동시에 대리인이 정보수집 없이 주인이 정보를 왜곡하였다고 주장할 인센티브도 없앨 수 있다.
