Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the operating energy consumption of a heat pump driven liquid desiccant (HPLD) air conditioning system compared with a conventional air conditioning system in an apartment building. HPLD system design and operating logic were suggested to apply in an apartment building. The HPLD system is composed of a liquid desiccant (LD) system and a heat pump (HP) system. The evaporator of the HP system cools liquid desiccant solution of absorber for dehumidifying the process air and then the dried process air passed the absorber of the LD system is cooled by auxiliary evaporator of HP system to meet the target supply air conditions. The condenser of the HP system heats regenerator liquid desiccant solution to maintain the solution concentration for dehumidification performance. The conventional air conditioning system consists of an air source electric heat pump (EHP) system and an energy recovery ventilator (ERV). The results showed that the proposed HPLD system reduced 10% of the operating energy consumption because it provides decoupled control of temperature and humidity of the process air avoiding condensation dehumidification and reheating load.
