Abstract
In this work, the thermal and mechanical properties of basalt fibers were investigated in terms of thermal stability and tensile strength and compared with other two fibers, such as glass and carbon fibers. As a result, the thermal stability of basalt fibers determined by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed a superior 10 that of glass and carbon fibers. And, their tensile modulus obtained by single fiber debonding test was also much higher than other two fibers. However, the lowest value was obtained in case of tensile strength of the fibers studied. Therefore, it was concluded that the basall fiber was desirable for high performance applications requiring the high temperature thermal stability.
