- Abstract
- This paper presents a multi-degree analysis of self-excited vibrations of a grinding system including the spindle and the workpiece rotational effects. A dynamic analysis was carried out for an external cylindrical plunge grinding process. Governing equations were derived by applying a finite element method to the rotor structure of the spindle and workpiece, and the grinding force was modelled using empirical equations. By computerizing this model, the displacement of the workpiece and grinding force were simulated with machining time. The simulation predicts the effects of the stiffness and damping coefficients of the spindle bearing on the displacement and grinding force. The effects on the chatter growth rate are also presented.
