Abstract

요하네스 브람스(Johannes Brahms 1833-1897)는 낭만주의 시대의 여러가지 장르 중 하나인 Lied(예술가곡)를 발전시키는데 공헌한 작곡가이다. 그의 가곡은 그가 낭만주의 시대의 작곡가임에도 불구하고 고전주의 음악의 특징을 사용하여 자신만의 독특한 높은 예술적 경지로 승화시켰다. '네 개의 엄숙한 노래(Vier ernste Gesange)'는 브람스가 사랑하는 클라라와 1895년 가을에 프랑크푸르트에서 헤어진 후 그녀가 뇌졸증으로 쓰러지자 클라라에 대한 배려와 자신의 생애의 마지막에 대한 예측으로 이 4개의 가곡을 작곡하였다. 이 작품은 성경구절을 가사로 인용하였는데, 자신의 삶에 있어서 종말을 예감하고 세상사의 허무함과 죽음을 노래하고 그 죽음을 축복으로 승화시키면서 하나님 사랑으로만 영원한 구원을 얻을 수 있다는 메시지를 담고 있다. 인생의 다양한 문제를 어떻게 받아들이고 어떻게 걸어가는가는 그 사람의 죽음에 의해 명백해지는 것이지만 창작가로서의 브람스는 죽음에 앞서 만년의 종교가곡 「네 개의 엄숙한 노래(Vier ernste Gesange)Op.121」를 통해 인간으로서, 예술가로서의 전부를 쏟아놓은 '유언장'을 후세의 사람들에게 보냈다고 할 수 있다. 이 논문은 그의 생애에 있어서 마지막 예술가곡 작품인 「네 개의 엄숙한 노래(Vier ernste Gesange)Op.121」에 대한 연구로서, 브람스의 생애와 작품세계 등에 대해 포괄적으로 논할 것이며, 4개의 엄숙한 노래(Vier ernste Gesange)에 대한 특징과 배경을 살펴볼 것이며, 가사와 반주부의 관계와 형식 및 구조, 화성, 리듬 등을 깊이 있게 분석함으로써 브람스 가곡의 특징이 어떠한지를 연구할 것이다.; Johannes Brahms(1833~1897), is a composer who elaborated in lied in the Romantic period. His art song were culminated in a higher stage of his unique art through successful using with the characteristic elements of classical music, although he was a Romantic composer. He composed 「Vier ernste Gesange」 with concerning of his lover Clara, who fell by cerebral apoplexy after their separation in fall of 1895, in Frankfurt and foreboding the end of his own life. Brahms chose the Bible verses on the text of this work. He expressednihility of mundane life and death, foreboding the end of his own life, sublimed the death as benediction. The message contains that people can be saved eternally only through the love of God. It becomes obvious by the person's death how he received various problems of life and walked them, but we can say that Brahms sent a testament to people of coming age that he had spilt his everything as a human and an artist through religious song 「Vier ernste Gesange op.121」 before his death. This is a study on 「Vier ernste Gesange(four serious songs) op. 121」, which is his last lied. This paper will discuss Brahm's life, the characteristics of his works comprehensively, and the feature and background of four serious songs. This study will also illustrate the feature of Brahm's lied through in depth analysis of its' text the relation of accompaniment of music, form, structure, harmony and rhythm.
