도미니크 아르젠토 가곡집 『Six Elizabethan Songs』의 음악작시법 연구

Abstract

20세기 미국의 대표적인 현대 작곡가 도미니크 아르젠토(Dominick Argento, 1927-)는 인간의 목소리에 관심이 많아 14개의 오페라, 10개의 연가곡 등 50여개의 성악곡을 작곡하였다. 문학적 조예가 깊었던 그는 시의 운율와 의미를 노래의 선율과 반주에 잘 표현, 전달하여 작곡했으며, 전통적인 음악기법과 현대적인 음악기법을 접목시켜 그만의 독특한 음악적 색채를 만들어 냈다. 이러한 이유로 아르젠토의 성악곡들은 높이 평가되고 있다. 『Six Elizabethan Songs』(엘리자베스 시대의 6개의 노래)는 시와 음악의 결합이 효과적으로 작곡된 작품이다. 아르젠토는 시의 강세와 음악의 리듬을 일치시키는데 그만의 개성적인 어법을 보이며, 시의 내용과 느낌들을 잦은 전조와 화성의 변화, 구체적인 다이나믹 표기로 다양하고 효과적으로 표현하였다. 이 연가곡의 제목에서 알 수 있듯이 가사는 엘리자베스 1세 시대의 문호가의 시에서 발췌하여 사용했으며, 부드럽고 서정적인 화성을 사용해 그 당시의 엘리자베스 시대의 분위기를 표현하고 있다. 본 논문은 아르젠토와 각 시인들의 생애 및 엘리자베스 시대의 시대적 배경과 그 당시 시문학의 대략적인 개요와 더불어 시의 해석, 연, 행, 각운 등의 구조적인 분석을 하였다. 이러한 시 분석을 통해 아르젠토는 음악이 시의 세밀한 구성요소들을 충실하게 반영할 뿐만 아니라 나아가 음악적 효과가 가미되어 시 자체보다 더욱 더 강화된 예술적 가치를 담아내는 작품으로 자리매김 할 수 있었다. 이러한 음악적 효과를 위해 아르젠토는 선율, 화성, 리듬, 반주에 있어서 묘사적인 기법과 시의 정서나 분위기 등의 느낌들을 표현하는 장치로 탁월한 작법을 보여주었다. 이 연구는 『Six Elizabethan Songs』에 담겨진 아르젠토의 뛰어난 음악 작시법에 관하여 고찰해 봄으로 그의 예술가곡 세계를 재조명해 볼 수 있는 기회가 되었다.; Dominick Argento, one of American typical modern music composers(1927-) in the twentieth century, composed about 50 vocal songs including 14 operas and 10 love songs, with much attention in voice that each human being made. He expressed and composed rhythm and meanings of poem to musical melody and accompaniment, through his good literary sense. And, the composer combined traditional musical techniques with modern musical ones in order to create his own unique musical tone. This attributes vocal songs by Argento to high status. 『Six Elizabethan Songs』is counted as one of exquisite harmony of poem with music. Argento Composer reflected his own distinct techniques and language into harmonious poetic accent and musical rhyme, with various and effective expressions of poetic contents and feelings through frequently-changing modulation/ metamorphose and specific dynamics. As the title of this love song showed, the song lines were extracted and used from literary poem collection in the age of Elizabeth I, in expression of atmosphere of the age of Elizabeth I with the use of spectacular and lyric metamorphose. In this regard, this research thesis made the structural and comparative analysis on overviews/ interpretations/ paragraphs/ lines and melody of contemporary poetic literature works as well as life and history of Argento and each poet and the age of Elizabeth. His poetic analysis led Argento to bring about multiple absorption of music into specific poetic components together with the more solid and artistic musical position/ value/ and effects than poetic ones. Taking into the consideration for the musical effects, Argento introduced his descriptive techniques into melody, metamorphose, rhythm and accompaniment, and he used his excellent musical mechanism appropriate for poetic scenery/ background and sentiments. Thus, this research thesis offered a momentum to reilluminate artistic world in consideration of remarkable musical composition methods used by Argento in 『Six Elizabethan Songs』.
