Abstract
It is wellknown that daylighting is the most effective way of reducing electric energy consumption in commercial buildings. The effectiveness of daylighting can be maximized by controlling artificial lighting in connection with rapidly changing daylighting conditions. In developed countries artificial lighting systems with dimming ballast and dimming controllers are already widely used for commercial buildings. In this study, a lighting control system was developed with BACnet protocol, which is an open standard protocol for building system controls. Then, the developed lighting control system was tested in a mock-up test room for one whole year in terms of electric lighting energy and illuminance levels. The mock-up test room was equipped with a total of seven fluorescent luminaires with electronic dimming ballasts and a photo sensor on the ceiling to detect reflected daylight and artificial light from the floor and workplane. This paper presents the structure of the BACnet-based lighting control system and the procedure and results of measurements in the mock-up test room. From the measurements it was known that an average of 42.9% of electric lighting energy was saved for ordinary work hours for the mock-up test room by electronically dimming the lighting fixtures.
