The study aims to find out some fundamental design strategies in terms of the formal composition of Korean museums. It is defined that compositional elements are mass units, which are very much related to the space program of a museum. A museum building is combined with a mass or several mass units in different ways. It is suggested that the way how to combine is closely related with the space program. The space program reflects on the social role of the museum of that time. In this respect, the paper tries to understand the relationship between the mass composition and the space program in order to define the formal characteristics of contemporary Korean museum architecture. In considering the whole composition of a museum building, 3 different types can be found. It can be said that each composition type shows intrinsic characteristics of the time when it was built.en_US
