Abstract
In automotive industry, traditional manual actuating mechanisms have been replaced with motor actuators to enhance product value by improving convenience and safety. In this study, we performed design optimization of a motor actuator for a hydraulic brake booster to minimize motor actuator response time. The motor actuator for a vehicle hydraulic booster should be small for fitting it in the engine room, able to make enough hydraulic pressure, and especially fast enough to stop a vehicle in a short time in emergency situation. A commercial dynamics FEA software and a commercial electro-magnetic FEA software were employed to evaluate the actuator response time, and the simulation results were validated by comparing them with test results. We adopted a surrogate-based design optimization (SBDO) approach because one simulation time took quite long. We performed SBDO using a commercial process integration and design optimization (PIDO) software, “PIAnO”, and successfully obtained an improved actuator design compared to an initial design.
