공연예술 레퍼토리 구축 과정의 연구-연극 〈가믄장아기〉를 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 <가믄장아기>가 2003년 초연 이래로 2014년 10주년 기념공연을 할 때까지 극단 북새통의 레퍼토리로서 어떻게 구축되어 왔는가에 대한 과정 레퍼토리요소별로 분석하였다. 레퍼토리란 신작이 공연된 이후 여러차례 재공연을 통해 수정·보완을 거쳐 성숙된 공연예술단체의 개별공연을 말한다. <가믄장아기>를 레퍼토리론의 관점에서 연구하기 위해서 해외사례로 레퍼토리 극단을 운영하다가 현재는 레퍼토리극장을 운영하고 있는 영국 로열셰익스피어컴퍼니를 살펴보았다. 로열셰익스피어컴퍼니는 영국 레퍼토리 운동 이후 그 개념에 가장 가깝게 극단과 극장을 운영하고 있다. 국내에서 레퍼토리 시스템을 운영하고 있는 극단은 극단 산울림과 극단 학전, 신시컴퍼니이다. 극단 산울림은 산울림소극장을 기반으로 레퍼토리를 구축해왔으며, 대표적인 레퍼토리로는 <고도를 기다리며>가 있다. 그 외에도 시대의 흐름을 읽고 무대에 올린 여성주의적인 공연들로 극단의 레퍼토리를 확장하였다. 극단 학전은 레퍼토리 산실인 학전소극장을 기반으로 레퍼토리를 구축하였다. 극단 학전은 <고추장떡볶이>, <무적의 삼총사> 등 꾸준히 어린이 청소년극을 올렸으며, <지하철 1호선>을 대표적인 레퍼토리로 개발하였다. 신시컴퍼니는 대표적인 뮤지컬 전문단체로 프로듀서시스템을 바탕으로 국내외 라이센스 뮤지컬과 창작공연 기획/제작을 하고 있다. 제작과 기획의 역량을 동시에 갖춘 단체이다. 극단 북새통은 한국종합예술학교 아동청소년극 전공자들이 모여 만든 아동청소년극 전문 단체로 예술감독과 대표의 분리 및 체계적인 조직운영은 레퍼토리 공연을 만드는 데 밑바탕이 되었다. <가믄장아기>는 제주설화 <삼공본풀이>를 소재로 만든 공연으로 <삼공본풀이>의 주요 인물인 ‘가믄장아기’의 독립적이며 운명을 개척해 나가는 모습을 바탕으로 여성주의적 관점을 바탕으로 희곡으로 전환되었다. <가믄장아기>가 극단 북새통의 레퍼토리 구축과정을 레퍼토리 요소별로 공연적 요소, 언어적 요소, 교육적 요소, 놀이적 요소, 홍보마케팅적 요소로 나눠서 분석하였다. 공연적 요소로는 전통연희형식을 수용하였던 점을 중심으로 분석하였고, 언어적 요소로는 지역문화의 측면에서 제주말과 제주민요의 활용과 레퍼토리 구축과정에서의 활용안 수정·보완의 측면에서 다루었다. 교육적 요소로는 스터디가이드북의 활용 및 연극놀이을 통한 문화예술교육활동을 중심으로 분석하였고, 놀이적 요소로는 놀이성의 극대화를 위한 노력의 측면에서 분석하였다. 홍보마케팅적 요소로는 수요층에 대한 분석과 홍보물의 문구 및 구성의 변화를 중심으로 분석하였다. <가믄장아기>의 성과로는 제주무속신화의 희곡으로 전환, 10년 간 이어진 공연활동, 전통연희의 현대적 수용과 그로 인한 해외 공연예술축제에 초청 및 수상을 꼽을 수 있다. <가믄장아기>의 레퍼토리구축 이후에 지역문화와 소수문화에 대한 관심을 바탕으로 다양성의 면모는 이후 공연레퍼토리에 영향을 주었으며, 안산문화예술의전당 상주단체로 선정되어 활동하면서 안산의 지역문화를 바탕으로 한 공연은 우수사례로 선정되기도 하였다. 공연예술단체의 지속적인 창작활동의 기반을 마련하고 안정적인 운영을 할 수 있도록 공연레퍼토리구축 하는 일은 공연예술단체와 관객 모두에게 도움을 주는 일로써 공연예술단체의 레퍼토리 구축을 위한 환경을 마련되어 공연예술단체의 자생력을 높이고 관객 역시 성숙한 공연을 볼 수 있기를 바란다.; By the Process Repertoire factors, This study analyzed how the play Gameunjang Baby has been built as a repertoire of the theater BST from the first performance in 2003 through the 10th celebrated performance in 2004. A repertoire means an individual performance of a theater which is revised/ complemented, and then improved through several rounds of run. To study Gameunjang Baby in terms of Repertoire Theory, A foreign example, the English Royal Shakespeare Company which run a repertoire theater but now is running a repertoire playhouse, was examined. After the English Repertoire Movement, the English Royal Shakespeare Company has run its theater and playhouse closest to the very conception of the movement. In Korea, the theater Sanwoollim, Hakchon, and seensee company have run their repertoire system. On the base of the Sanwoollim small theater, Sanwoollim has its representative repertoire Waiting for Godot, and it has extended its own repertoire through the feministic plays on the current of the times. Hakchon has built its repertoire at its little playhouse "The Hakchon Theater", the heartland of its repertoire. It has performed many plays for young audience such as Gochujang Tteokbokki, A Matchless Trio, and developed the play Subway Line No.1 as its representative repertoire. The Seensee company, a leading musical organization, has planned and produced the original performances and licensed musical all over the world on the basis of producer system. It is equipped with the skills for planning and producing performances. The BST is a professional performing organization for children and youth, established by the majors in the theater for young audience, separated an art director from a CEO and systemized its sub-organizations to make its own repertoire. Gameunjang Baby is a performance based on the tale Samgong bonpuri in Jeju, in which the leading character Gameunjang is independent and makes her own fate. This play was written on this feministic perspective Samgong bonpuri has. This study shows how the play Gameunjang has been built as a repertoire of the BST by the performing, linguistic, educational, recreational, and promoting/marketing factors. The performing factor is centered on the acceptance of traditional performing style and the linguistic factor, the linguistic meaning of Jeju language and folk songs; they are modified and improved as the performance played in accordance with the response of audience so that they could fit into the plays. The educational factor is analyzed in terms of the utilization of studying guide books and culture-art-instruction activities through play recreation. The recreational factor is studied in aspect of efforts for maximizing recreational character. Finally, The promoting/marketing factor features the analysis of demand and the phraseological and constructional variation in promotional materials. It is achievement of Gameunjang Baby to adapt Jeju shamanistic myths for the play, perform for ten successive years, accept traditional performances in modernity, and be awarded as well as invited to the international performance art festivals. After Gameunjang Baby has been built as a repertoire, cultural diversity prompted by interest in local and minority culture has had an influence on followed repertoires. Furthermore, the BST was appointed as the resident group of Ansan Arts Center, and thereafter the BST's play based on local culture of Ansan was chosen as a good example. To make repertoires allows performing artistic organizations to run their theaters in a stable manner, encourages them to create works constantly, and benefits both the organizations and audience in the long run. Therefore, I hope that the environment for building repertoires is set up for the organizations to develop their independent strength, and that audience can enjoy high-level performances as well.
