In the Yellow Sea, previous studies attempted to characterize sedimentary OM using bulk elemental and isotope analysis, radiocarbon, and lipid biomarker (n-alkanes) analysis. However, restricted sampling sites could not provide information on the source and distributions of OM in the eastern part of the East China Sea. To solve this shortcoming, the source and distribution of OM were investigated for surface sediments collected from the 117 regions of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea using multi-tracers (Rock-Eval parameters, bulk organic parameters, radiocarbons, n-alkanes). This area has an overall low C/N ratio (average: 8.11 ± 3.92), enriched δ13CTOC (average: -22.01 ± 0.82‰) in bulk sediments as previously known, and marine-derived OM predominates. Rock-Eval analysis showed that sedimentary OM was fresh and mixed with marine- and terrestrial-derived OM, but marine-derived OM was dominant and supporting the bulk elemental and isotopic results. However, there is considerable fossil OC contributions in the sediments taken from the Korean coastal estuaries, which suggests that fossil OC is being transported into the Yellow Sea through Korean rivers. The distribution patterns of n-alkanes showed that petroleum-derived OC was contributed to the sediments in the southern part of Jeju with high UCM concentrations, and low CPI and NAR values. However, Rock-Eval parameters showed that most of OC is thermally immature and marine-derived OC, suggesting that the proportion of petroleum-derived OC to the total OC pool is minor. In summary, the multi-tracer approach seems to be more appropriate to characterize sedimentary OM in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea.-
