Abstract
Wireless Low Floor Tram, tram developed by Korea Railroad Research Institute, has as its most important feature to be powered by a 196 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, not requiring power lines and reducing construction costs. It can share road with other vehicles and/or pedestrians as it has an embedded rail. Another advantage is its low floor property, distance between ground and vehicle’s floor is less than 350 mm. This way, elderly and handicapped passenger can get on or off more easily, instead of buses which are not practical. Traffic jams and pollution can be minimized as it carries in eco-friendlier way more people by area when comparing to other transportation methods such as cars and buses. In Korea still there isn’t any implemented tram yet, however abroad it’s common to see, for example: France, Germany, Japan, Czech Republic are extensively using old and/or modern trams. KRRI developed tram has the goal of improving public transportation payment method as nowadays transportation payment systems still require to tap transportation card to NFC devices. In this paper, we propose a technology based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) that enables communication between passenger’s smartphones and onboard installed BLE devices automatically. Bluetooth Low Energy was chosen as suitable technology as it is presented in most of nowadays smartphones. Therefore, a number of studies have been conducted and results comparing two methods (RSSI and simple advertising) are presented in this paper. In the future, if proposed smart payment system succeeds in trams, similar concepts can be used in other public transportation methods, such as: subway and buses.
