Abstract
Superabsorbent polymers (SAP) as hydrogels are a lightly cross-linked hydrophilic functional polymer material, which could absorb and retain lots of water or aqueous fluids even under intense pressure. It is important to improve their various other characteristics such as mechanical properties, water absorption rate, residual monomer content, antibacterial and water permeability as well as the absorption performance of the SAP. We studied important synthetic conditions such as neutralization degree and crosslinking density of the SAP using acrylic-based monomers to improve absorption performance. Superabsorbent clay nanocomposites were also prepared to improve their mechanical and absorption performances. The antibacterial properties of the superabsorbent nanocomposites were enhanced by the introduction of silver. We studied post-treatment process of the SAP such as the quenching and aging process to improve various absorption performances. By the post-treatment processes, absorption rate, residual monomer content, and conversion ratio of the SAP were improved. Surface-crosslinking process was applied to improve the mechanical properties and water permeability. The structure of the SAP was characterized by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM).
