Abstract
Accompanying the attempts to miniaturize the devices into nanoscale, nanostructures have attracted research interests to mainly nanoscale application industry due to its unique properties. The device performance was closely related to the various properties, which is sensitive to the surface condition. However, the accuracy observing and analyzing about these characteristics is difficult in experimental process. From this reason, this thesis mainly dealt with the analysis about the surface effect on the structural, electronic, and chemical properties of nanostructure using density functional theory (DFT) calculation, which is one of the powerful methods to observe and analyze the phenomena in atomic scale, when applied to the various device. Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in thin film is the key factor to obtain good properties for high density storage devices. Thus, the first system dealt in this thesis is the surface structure and magnetic anisotropy energy of L1_(0)-ordered Co/Pd (001). The stable surface structures were Pd-rich A and Co-rich B. The DOS showed a clear distinct electronic structure between stable structures derived from the structural difference. Pd-rich A only showed PMA when compared to Co-rich B and other materials that have the same structure. This result indicates that PMA does not always show in a sandwich structure such as Pd-rich A. Therefore, the results will provide a useful guide to magnetic devices created using L1_(0)-ordered Co/Pd (001) on substrate Pd. The second topic is that magnetic and electronic properties, when the different functional groups exist on each side of Cr_(2)C-based MXene, was investigated. Unlike typical 2D materials, each functional group in the Cr_(2)C with F and OH, Cr_(2)CF(OH), was found to have a negligible effect on the magnetic and electronic properties of the other side. This unique phenomenon results from the small differences in geometry, compare to the Cr_(2)CF_(2) and Cr_(2)C(OH)_(2). Due to the preserved magnetic moments of the bound Cr, Cr_(2)CF(OH) exhibits ferrimagnetism. Likewise, semiconducting characters are present because the atomic contributions of each energy level from Cr_(2)CF_(2) and Cr_(2)C(OH)_(2) are maintained. Thus, it demonstrates that a combination of functional groups that shows certain desired properties can be selected when designing Cr_(2)C-based spintronic and electronic devices. The third is that the electrochemical performance of g-C_(3)N_(4) as catalyst of the non-aqueous Li-O_(2) batteries was investigated using the initial stage of Li_(X)O_(2). Using ab-initio thermodynamics calculation, it confirmed that the overpotential of heptazine is remarkable, comparable to the triazine and the precious metal. It revealed that the overpotential differences between substrates were affected by the charge voltage. Using the potential-dependent surface phase diagram, it was confirmed that the charge voltage relates to the adsorption energy of LiO_(2). These results stem from the electrons differences of bound N atoms in the cavity, which vary depending on the heptazine and triazine. Thus, these findings may provide a noble insight to design the N-doped carbon based materials as catalyst for non-aqueous Li-O_(2) batteries, which have low overpotential than the existing catalyst materials. The final topic is the feasibility of PtS_(2) as a co-catalyst to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of g-C_(3)N_(4). This heterostructure is suitable for an efficient photocatalyst because its band gap was contained in the rage of visible-light. It show the type-II heterostructure. Therefore, this system complements the weak points of g-C_(3)N_(4) that include fast recombination of the photogenerated electron-hole pair. It confirmed that the g-C_(3)N_(4)/PtS_(2) has strong oxidation ability. This thesis could thus bring a noble insight to design the co-catalyst for g-C_(3)N_(4)-based photocatalyst, which can increase lifetime of the photogenerated electron-hole pair. Likewise, this thesis found out new phenomena and it is closely related to the determination factor of device performance, which is the direction of magnetic anisotropy, preserved magnetic and electronic properties, low overpotential, and lifetime of photogenerated electron-hole pair. Thus, this thesis could be make a great contribution to the development of nanoscale devices using the surface engineering for the proper properties according to the device.
