Abstract
An increasing number of citizens demand an environment where they could access a wider range of data and services at a public library within a community. However, reference room spaces at public libraries offering various services such as nonbook materials and multimedia materials tend to be divided in a rather standardized way. This study tries to suggest basic materials for spatial plans considering organic linkage of spaces by analyzing cross-sectional organization of spaces at reference room section of public libraries and their spatial organization systems. The results suggest that each reference rooms were places in different floors according to the characteristics of data; cultural education section and public section were scattered in different floors. It seems that it needs to have spatial plans allowing users to easily access to a space they are looking for. In addition, there were cases where general library and digital library are on the same floor. There were various types of spatial organizations depending on the locations of entrances and spatial organization of each section and public libraries tend to separate spaces according to the nature of data. It needs to establish ways to plan spaces of public libraries considering users" attitudes and preferences so as to vitalize each reference room section.
