말러의 초기음악에 나타나는 공간성

Abstract

말러는 명백한 무대 예술적 감성을 가지고 작품에 공간성을 불어넣기 위해새로운 표현방법을 실험하였다. 그는 무대 밖 오케스트라와 음향적 효과를나타내는 여러 지시어들을 사용하였다. 주도면밀하게 고안된 이 무대 밖오케스트라로부터 나오는 멀리서 들려오는 소리는 갑자기 진행되고 있던음악에 끼어들어 내러티브를 중단시킨다. 본 논문은 말러의 초기작품인 ˂탄식의 노래˃, 교향곡 1번과 2번을 중심으로 그의 공간성에 대해 살펴보았으며, 멀리서 들리는 소리를 구성하는요소가 무엇인지, 이 소리는 음악 안에서 어떤 기능을 하는지에 대해 알아보았다. 이 무대 밖 악기들에서 기인하는 공간성은 말러의 어린 시절부터 자리 잡고 있었던 폴리포니의 개념과 깊은 연관성이 있는데, 그것은여러 거리에서 여러 방향에서, 때로는 이동하면서 들리는 온갖 종류의 주위의 소리들을 다 포함하는 폴리포니이다. 말러는 그의 교향곡에서 이러한 모든 이질적이고 겹겹의 층을 이루는 소리들을 한 순간의 장면에 담은것 같은 소닉 타블로를 만들어낸다. 말러의 소닉 타블로는 음악작품에서소리의 조작이나 그 재료의 사용에 있어서 소리에 대한 새로운 개념을 예견하고 있다. Mahler experimented a new means of expression with overtly theatrical sensibility to bring into spatiality in his works. He deployed off-stage orchestra and used various markings for acoustic effect. Typically distant sound heard from the meticulously manipulated off-stage orchestra abruptly breaks into the body of a piece and interrupts musical narrative. In this study particular attention was given to spatiality in Mahler’s earliest works of Das klagende Lied and Symphonies 1 and 2, and examine what constitutes the distant sound and how they function in the entire piece. Spatiality of off-stage instruments seems strongly influenced by the concept of polyphony from his childhood, which encompasses all kinds of environmental sound came from different distances and directions, sometimes with mobility. Mahler created a sonic tableau composite of the heterogeneous and layered sonic events, which anticipates new sonic exploitations in the aspects of manipulation of sound and choice of sound materials in music.
