Mycobacterium chimaera is a recently described species distinct from M. intracellulare. M. chimaera is regarded as less virulent than M. intracellulare. Using multi-locus sequence-based identification, M. chimaera lung disease was diagnosed in 11 patients. Clinical characteristics and outcomes of M. chimaera lung disease were comparable to M. intracellulare lung disease. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
