- Abstract
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown superior intrinsic properties attractive for
various potential applications. By creating nanostructures, it is possible to control the
fundamental properties of materials even without changing the materials' chemical
composition. Thus, methods to assemble CNTs into hierarchical arrays with controllable
shape, location, orientation, and density are needed. A honeycomb-like CNT (H-CNT)
structure was obtained by capillary forming method on vertically grown CNT (V-CNT).
The V-CNT was synthesized by using low pressure thermal chemical vapor deposition (LP-
TCVD) method with 24 μm in height while the formed H-CNT has lower height (5 μm)
due to densification process. However, the densification process did not harm the CNT as
proven with similar D/G band ratio of V-CNT and as grown V-CNT (0.71). Since CNTs
have a one-dimensional structure, their alignment is able to significantly affect the
electrical and mechanical properties of the sensor. Furthermore, as the number of aged
structures is increased, the demand of a sensor system development in structural health
monitoring (SHM) also is increased. Thus, it is not surprising that the CNT/polymer
composites for strain sensor with high durability and reliability have been hardly
investigated. In this regard, a highly durable and reliable flexible strain sensor using HCNT
embedded polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was developed. The H-CNT/PDMS strain
sensor showed excellent durability and reliability in terms of resistance changes under more
4,500 strain-relaxation cycles at 70% strain. However, this strain sensor showed low gauge
factor (0.44 at 70% strain) due to the density improvement of CNT that could play a role
as a junction between CNTs. the H-CNT/PDMS strain sensor displayed a good linearity
and stability through dynamic strain testing on the actual cantilever beam.
