The fiasco of Oxy’s humidifier disinfectant shows how important it is for corporations to voluntarily observe their social responsibilities. South Korean corporations have been competitively engaging in corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. But this does not seem to be helping build trust in corporations. Rather, anti-corporate sentiments seem to be on the rise. Multinational corporations such as Oxy are being criticized because their CSR policies are biased towards international standards while neglecting local sentiments. In order to sanction socially irresponsible corporations, new policies – such as punitive damages – should be adopted, the government should adamantly seek legal remedies, and civil society should monitor them closely.en_US
