인간 조건 하에서의 합리성 : 진화, 공감, 제도

Abstract

이 글은 경제학에서 통상적으로 수용되고 있는 합리성 개념을 확장할 필요성과 그 방향에 대해 진화생물학, 심리학, 과학철학, 윤리학, 과학기술학(STS) 분야의 최근 논의를 바탕으로 탐색한다. 경제학적 합리성 개념을 확장할 필요성은 진화의 역사를 통해 특정한 심리적 기제를 발달시켜온 인간이라는 동물이 지닌 구체적이고 독특한 ‘합리성’의 내용을 담아내기에는 기존의 개념이 협소하다는 점이 경제학 내부 및 외부의 최근 여러 경험적, 이론적 연구를 통해 밝혀지고 있다는 사실에서 나온다. 그렇기에 경제학적 합리성의 확장의 방향 역시 이러한 최근의 연구 결과를 반영하는 것이어야 하고, 그것의 핵심은 진화를 통해 형성된 공감 능력이 수많은 제도를 통해 규제된다는 현실적인 ‘인간 조건’을 보다 적극적으로 반영하는 것이 되어야 한다. ‘인간 조건’을 반영하면서도 여전히 합리성의 규범성(normativity)을 확보할 수 있는 방안은 추상적인 절대 원리에서가 아니라 이러한 ‘인간 조건’을 보다 덕스러운 방식으로 변화시킬 수 있다는 존재론적 가능성에서 찾아야 한다.This paper investigates the necessity for expanding standard conception of rationality in economics, and some fruitful directions to do it, helped by recent empirical and theoretical findings of evolutionary biology, psychology, philosophy of science, ethics, and STS(Science and Technology Studies). The call for the needed expan- sion can be found in the recognition that we, human beings, are the product of natural evolutionary process which developed in us certain specific and rather unique psychological makeup and mechanisms. The conventional understanding of economic rationality is too narrow and inadequate to accommodate the consequences of this empirical fact. Therefore, the expanded conception of rationality should reflect this ‘human conditions’, that is our sympathy capability has been shaped by our evolutionary past, and constrained by a number of institutions we developed in our society. We should seek the foundation of the ‘normativity’ of the expanded rationlity not in any metaphysical principles, but rather in the ontological possibility of improving these ‘human conditions’ through better institutions and customs.
