조정철의 ｢탐라잡영(耽羅雜詠)｣ 연구

Abstract

조정철(趙貞喆, 1751～1831)은 자가 성경(成卿)·태성(台城)이고, 호는 정헌(靜軒).대릉(大陵)이다. 그는 그간 문학사에서 그리 알려진 인물이 아니지만, 필자는 지속적으로 그에게 관심을 갖고 연구를 진행해 왔다. 조정철은 조선시대 최장기 유배인으로, 29년의 유배 생활 중에서 27년 동안을 제주에서 적거(謫居)하였다. 그의 문집인 『靜軒瀛海處坎錄』은 유배의 체험만을 다루고 있으니 드문 경우라 할 만하며, 그중 ?耽羅雜詠? 33수는 숫자나 내용면에서 제주에 대한 자세한 정보를 담고 있어 매우 주목할 만한 자료이다. 제주의 풍속과 풍토에 대한 기록은 작가의 제주에 대한 시선을 담고 있어 매우 중요하다. 조정철은 풍속과 풍토에 대해서 아주 혹독하게 비판하고 있으며, 제주 관원들에 대해서도 아주 흥미로운 기록들을 남겼다. 이 기록들을 바탕으로 실제 유배객이나 제주 민중들이 관원들에 의해서 어떠한 취급을 받았는지를 파악할 수 있었다. 또한 제주 민중들은 진상품을 마련하느라 가혹할 정도로 진상(進上)과 부역(負役)에 시달렸다. 그는 이러한 백성들의 신고(辛苦)를 외면하지 않고 제주 백성들의 실상을 밝히려고 애썼다. 보통의 제주 관련 연작시에서 제주를 경외와 호기심으로 다루었다면 조정철의 경우 온전히 실제 사건에 근거하여 부조리한 현실을 고발하였다. 그러나 그가 철저하게 입도인(入島人)의 시선에 치우쳐 제주를 바라보고 있다는 점은 일정한 한계로 지적될 수 있다.The childhood name of Jo Jeong-cheol(趙貞喆, 1751～1831) is Seonggyeong and Taeseong and his pen name is Jeongheon and Daereung. He was not widely known in the history of literature up to now but I have been interested in and studying him. He was banished to Jeju for 27 years in his life in exile for 29 years as the person who lived in exile for the longest period during Joseon period. His collection of works "Jeongheonyeonghaechogamrok(靜軒瀛海處坎錄)" described only about his experience in exile. So it is very unusual case. "Tamrajapyeong(Songs of Tamra)"(耽羅雜詠) in "Jeongheonyeonghaechogamrok (靜軒瀛海處坎錄)" comprised 33 works. It is worth noticing Tamrajapyeong because it contained detailed information on Jeju(Tamra in the past) in terms of numbers and contents. Description on customs and climates in Jeju also contained the viewpoints of the writer on Jeju. So it is very important. Jo Jeong-cheol very rigorously criticized customs and climates of Jeju and also wrote very interesting information on the government employees of Jeju. The records in Tamrajapyeong enabled to identify how the government employees dealt with the residents of Jeju and exiles. Furthermore, the residents of Jeju were severely suffered from compulsory labor and preparation of specialties to be presented to the kings or high-ranking officers. Jo Jeong-cheol tried to reveal the reality of Jeju residents' life without ignoring hardship of Jeju residents. Through-composed poems related to Jeju generally had awe and curiosity on Jeju. However, Jo Jeong-cheol accused of the irrational reality based on the actual events in Jeju. Nevertheless, it would be his limit that he observed Jeju with the thoroughly one-sided viewpoint of a migrant to Jeju island.
