에피고넨의 시대, ‘내재적 발전론’을 다시 묻는다

Abstract

이 글에서는 내재적 발전론이 가진 본래적 양면성이 최근의 탈근대담론 비판 논의에서는 어떤 방식으로 새로이 전유되고 있는지를, 그 논리적 전개를 역으로 거슬러가면서 살펴보았다. 내재적 발전론자들은 근대를 정태적이고 위계적으로 이해함으로써 아직도 근대가 생명력을 가지고 있다고 간주한다. 또 한국 민족형성의 특수성을 지나치게 강조하고 민중적 민족주의의 주도성을 전제함으로써 통일 민족주의가 유효한 것으로 보고 있다. 그리고 내재적 발전론(특히 분단사학)이 가진 두 가지 얼굴 가운데서 극단적인 일국사적 전개를 중심으로 하는 통일 민족주의적 측면을 강조한다. 이런 민족문제에 관한 인식은 ‘근대의 생명력’을 강조하는 위계적 근대 이해에 그 토대를 두고 있다. 요컨대 내재적 발전론을 지키려 하는 탈근대담론 비판은, 내재적 발전론이 근거를 두어 왔던 두 개의 논리에 그 토대를 두고 있는 것이다.원래의 내재적 발전론이 가지고 있던 역사적 의의는 그 시대성 속에서 올바로 이해될 수 있는 것이다. 어떤 이론이든 그 시대적 맥락이 망각된 채 이해될 때, 그 이론은 더 이상 생명력을 유지할 수 없게 된다. 이제 근대와 민족주의에 대한 자기 성찰 위에서 복합적인 역사해석에 바탕을 둔 새로운 역사인식의 토대를 구축해나가야 할 시점이다. 가장 혁명적인 것이 가장 보수적인 것을 낳는 역설의 세계 그것이 바로 에피고넨의 세계이다. 이제 ‘에피고넨(epigone)의 세계’를 빨리 벗어나야 할 때이다.This paper looks at how the duality inherent in internal development theory is being newly appropriated in the recent critique on the postmodern discourse. Those who support the internal development theory understand the modern as static and hierarchical and consider the modern as still having a life-force. Furthermore, they overemphasize the particularity of Korea’s nation-formation and see “unification nationalism” as valid on the premise of the potential of “minjung (that is, people-centered) nationalism.” Of the two faces of internal development theory, especially that which is related to the history of national division, they emphasize the side of unification nationalism, which is centered on the development of single national history. Such a view of the national problem is based on hierarchical modernity that emphasizes the “life-force of the modern.” In other words, the critique of postmodern discourse, which tries to protect internal development theory, is grounded on the two logics of internal development theory.The original historical significance of internal development theory can be properly understood within a particular historical context. Any theory that is understood outside its historical context cannot maintain its life-force. Now is the moment co build a new historical understanding based on complex historical interpretations and on top of self-reflection about the modern and nationalism. The paradoxical world in which the most revolutionary gave birth to the most conservative is the world of epigone. The moment has come to quickly leave behind the world of epigone.
