조선유학자들의 동기감응론 인식

Abstract

본 연구는 風水의 구성논리에서 중요한 위치를 확보하고 다양한 논쟁을 불러일으킨 동기감응론에 대한 조선 유학자들의 인식에 대해서 살펴본다. 주자의 학문을 금과옥조처럼 여기던 조선의 유학들에게 있어서 주자의 『山陵議狀』을 비롯한 동기감응론의 수용은 전적으로 받아들이기도 그렇다고 부정할 수도 없는 상황에 직면한다. 그래서 조선의 유학들은 풍수를 전적으로 부정하기 보다는 긍정도 부정도 아닌 어정쩡한 자세를 견지한다. 왜냐하면 동기감응론을 부정하던 자신들의 주장을 스스로 부정하는 우를 범할 수도 그렇다고 주자의 의견을 부정할 수도 없었기 때문이다. 이러한 기조는 조선왕조 내내 조선 유학자들의 생각을 지배하고 있었다. 그러나 일정한 영역에서는 유학자들의 의식 속에도 동기감응론을 부정하기 보다는 일부 수용하는 생각은 존재하고 있었다. 물론 그것이 꼭 풍수서와 같은 길흉 화복의 형태가 아닐지라도 또 다른 형태의 동기감응론은 존재하고 있었다. 명확한 신분사회에서 벼슬길에 나가 권력을 가져야만 인간다운 삶을 살 수 있는 환경적인 요인은 획기적인 신분 상승의 기회를 찾아야만 했다. 따라서 돌파구를 풍수에서 찾고자 하였고 이러한 요구에 부응하는 음택 풍수는 상당히 매력적인 요소를 가지고 있었다. 당장 눈으로 확인하기 어렵고 인간의 힘으로 해결할 수 없는 영역을 해결하는 신비한 마력을 가진 것으로 인식하고 있었기 때문이다. 여기에 유교에 바탕을 둔 조상숭배사상과의 결합은 음택풍수에 대한 폭발적인 수요를 불러일으키기에 이른다. 따라서 자기 자신만 아는 현대인들에게 있어 아쉬운 조상 섬김과 효 사상을 보완 한다는 측면에서 음택 풍수를 통한 동기감응론의 장점은 나름의 가치성을 가진다고 할 수 있다.In this study, an awareness about the Identical-Chi sympathy theory of Confucian scholar in the Joseon Dynasty that has been a solid foothold and a controversy causing subject of Feng shui is focussed. To the Confucianist in the Joseon Dynasty who strictly adhered the doctrines of Chu-tzu(朱子, 1130~1200), the Identical-Chi sympathy theory was not fully acceptable but also deniable. So they straddled the fence about Feng shui. They could not accept it outwardly. Because they had contradicted the Identical-Chi sympathy theory, they were in a dilemma about the problem which would have made their scholar wrong. The thought had overwhelmed the Confucianist throughout the Joseon Dynasty period. However, the Confucianist internally accepted some parts of the Identical-Chi sympathy theory. Even the idea did not exactly match with fortunes of Feng shui, it worked separately. In a hierarchical society system, it was necessary that people at that time had to get into the government service and had to find a way to be upwardly mobile to live like a human being. With this reason they tried to make a breakthrough by Feng shu. Especially, the Feng shui for grave site was very attractive. People at that time recognized it as a spiritual and magical power that human could not understand. Moreover, the ancestor worship thought had been derived from Confucianism. In conclusion, the Feng shui for grave site explosively demanded all over the society. It also has another value to modern people to complement barren humanity with the Identical-Chi sympathy theory of Feng shui.
