글로벌 vs. 국내 지향적 R&D 외국인투자 - 입지 요인 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 국내 진출 외국인투자기업의 연구소 설립에 영향을 미치는 입지 요인을 실증적으로 파악하고자 하는 연구이다. 구체적으로 본 연구에서는 외국인투자기업의 국내 연구소를 국내 지향적 연구소와 글로벌 지향적 연구소로 분류하고, 국내 연구소 설립시 고려하였던 입지 요인들의 상대적 중요도에 관하여 두 집단 간의 차이를 비교하고자 하였다. 이를 위해서 본 연구에서는 37개 글로벌 지향적 연구소와 39개 현지 지향적 연구소를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 실증 분석 결과, 우선 글로벌 지향적 연구소의 설립에는 본사와의 커뮤니케이션 용이성, 연구 인력의 인건비 요인이 국내 지향적 연구소 설립에서 보다 중요한 입지요인으로 발견되었다. 이와 함께, 국내 공장/판매 조직 여부와 국내 시장의 규모도 글로벌 지향적 연구소에서 더 중요한 입지 요인으로 고려된 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 선행 연구의 주장과 배치되는 결과이다. 이 결과는 우리나라에서는 다수의 글로벌 지향적 연구소 설립이 현지 지향적 연구소에서 진화하는 방식으로 이루어짐을 시사해주는 결과이다. This study is intended to investigate locational factors considered for Global R&D investment by foreign firms in Korea. Specifically, we classified foreign R&D investment into two groups - globally-oreinted vs. locally-oriented R&D investment, and compared the relative importance of locational factors between the two groups. We conducted surveys with 37 globally-oriented investments and 39 locally-oriented investments. Our findings indicate that ease of communications with the parent office and cost of local R&D personnel were more important factors for globally-oriented investments. In addition, the existence of local production/sales subsidiaries and the size of the local market were also found to be more important for globally-oriented investments. This findings may suggest that globally-oriented R&D investments tend to evolve from locally-oriented investments. Finally, policy implications are discussed as for attracting globally-oriented foreign investments.
