조선시대 일기에 나타난 성 의식 －보이는 성, 숨겨진 성－

Abstract

성(性)이란 매우 개인적인 차원의 일이다. 성 문제에 있어서 은폐나 왜곡은 어쩌면 당연한 일인지도 모른다. 문집은 말 그대로 저자 본인에 의해 한 번, 문집을 간행할 때 그와 관련된 관계자들에 의해 또 한 번 선별이 되는 까닭에 고인에게 누가 될 기록은 빠지기 마련이다. 반면 일기는 아주 개인적인 기록으로 날것 그대로를 담고 있어 내밀한 성 체험에 대한 기록을 어렵지 않게 찾을 수 있다. 일기도 자기 검열이 없을 수 없지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 빈번히 등장하는 성경험에 대한 기록은 그것이 별반 흠이 되지 않았음을 반증하고 있다. 조선은 정말 금욕(禁慾)을 절대선으로 믿고 실천했으며, 성적(性的)으로 매우 억압된 사회였을까? 본고에서는 일기 속에 나오는 성적 체험을 중심으로 조선시대 성의식에 대해 살펴보았다. 서얼, 열녀, 축첩, 처첩 간의 갈등까지 많은 문제들이 성 문제와 연동되어 있다. 그러나 문제의 본질인 성 그 자체에 대해서 당시에 주목한 사람들은 거의 없다. 남성의 성욕에 대한 관대함은 상대적으로 여성의 성을 억압하는 방향으로 틀어진다. 여성은 무성(無性)의 존재로 만들어 놓았으며, 열녀(烈女)의 삶을 강제했다. 엄격한 부도(婦道)를 강조하며 가부장제를 곤고히 했고, 현모양처(賢母良妻)라는 이름으로 자발적인 사회적 활동을 봉쇄하고 가족 내에 얽매어 두었다. 자신의 성욕으로 파생한 결과물인 자식마저도 서얼이란 이름의 딱지를 붙여서 사회 주류로 편입되는 것을 막아, 자신들만의 견고한 성을 구축해 놓았다. 성 문제는 지금껏 우리가 믿고 싶고 보고 싶은 조선이 아니라, 조선의 민낯을 여실하게 보여준다. 낯설지만 외면할 수 없는 사실이다. 이 남성의 자유분방한 성생활이 과연 우리 사회에 어떤 변화를 일으켰는지 주목해야 한다.Sex is included in very personal dimension. Hiding or distorting related to the sexual issues may be a matter of course. Collection of works don’t include the records which may damage the honors of the deceased. However, since diaries contain the personal records without hiding, it is not difficult to find out the records on the intimate sexual experience. This paper investigated the sexual awareness in Joseon period with the focus on the sexual experience observed in diaries.A number of problems including concubines' sons, chaste women, concubinage and conflicts among concubines were related to sexual issues. However, there were a few people who paid attention to the sex itself, the nature of the sexual problems at that time. Generosity on the sexual desire of men was accepted, but the sexual desire of women was relatively oppressed. Men built their own strong castle by preventing the children born by their sexual desires to enter into the mainstream society by naming them ‘concubines' sons’.The sexual issues showed the true appearance of Joseon, not Joseon which we wanted to identify and believe. It’s the fact which is strange to us but we can’t ignore. We have to focus on what kinds of changes were made by such freewheeling sexual life of men in our society.
