박인환 시편 ｢세월이 가면｣의 원전과 창작 과정

Abstract

박인환의 유작 「세월이 가면」은, 그동안 시인의 타계 직전인 1956년 이른 봄 명동의 어느 주점에서 순식간에 씌어졌다고 줄곧 증언되어왔다. 그때 그 자리에서 박인환의 친우였던 이진섭이 바로 곡을 붙였고 또 즉석에서 노래로 불려 급속하게 대중들에게 파고들었다는 것이다. 가령 이봉구, 송지영, 윤석산, 강계순, 김용성 등 박인환 관련 문헌의 저자들이 한결같이 이를 증언해왔다. 하지만 새로 발굴된 자료에 의하면 이러한 사실에 변화가 생긴다. 이번에 소개되는 발굴 자료는 「세월이 가면」이 노래로 탄생하게 된 과정을 알려주는 자료로서, 이 작품이 즉흥적으로 작사 작곡이 된 것이라는 그동안의 증언을 거스른다. 결국 우리는 이 시편이 즉석에서 순간적으로 씌어지고 작곡되고 불린 작품이 아니라, 박인환과 이진섭이 계획적 프로세스를 가지고 만들어낸 야심작이었다는 증언과 마주치게 된 것이다. 그리고 그동안 「세월이 가면」의 원전은 박인환이 남긴 친필 초고에 바탕을 둔 것으로 소개되었는데, 이 작품이 실린 최초의 지면 『아리랑』에 의해 새로운 원전이 확정되기에 이른다. 이 사실 또한 이번에 소개되는 자료에 의해 그 실증성이 한결 보완된다. 이러한 배경을 거느리고 있는 이 시편은 도회적 감각과 애잔한 서정으로 사랑의 기억을 노래한 작품으로서, 시인의 개성적 멋과 일상어의 균형적 결합이라는 성취를 이례적으로 낳았다. 이 작품은 그 자체로는 명동의 신화로, 감각적 구체와 사랑의 마음이 만나 이룬 애가로 우리에게 남았지만, 정작 박인환에게는 미학적 급진주의가 퇴행을 거듭하다 맞닥뜨린 최후의 골목이었다. 그렇게 비극적 시대를 살아간 한 시인이 남긴 사랑의 비가는, 애잔한 분위기와 감각을 제공하고 요청하면서 오래도록 불멸의 잔상을 남기면서 우리에게 기억될 것이다.It has been said that Park, In-hwan’s posthumous work 「세월이 가면」(As Time Passes) was written in an instant at a bar in Myeong-dong, early spring of 1956. At that time, Park’s close friend Lee, Jin-seop set a poem to music and became popular rapidly. Writers of books about Park, In-hwan such as Lee, Bong-gu, Song, Ji-young, Yun, Seok-san, Kang, Gye-soon, Kim, Yong-sung and others constantly testified so. According to newly excavated materials, however, it is not true. Newly excavated materials opened this time inform us how this poem became a song and it is against the testimony that the poem and song were extemporaneously written. In fact, Park, In-hwan and Lee, Jin-seop wrote this ambitious work with planned process. In the mean time, the original text of As Time Passes was introduced as it is based on the autograph draft by Park, however, the new original text will be decided by the work first published in 『아리랑』(Arirang). Newly excavated materials prove this fact. As Time Passes is a poem which depicts the memory of love with urban sense and sorrowful lyricism and successfully achieves balanced combination of poet’s individual charm and everyday language. This elegy of love by a poet who lived through tragic times will leave an eternal afterimage and be remembered for a long time offering and asking pitiful atmosphere and sense.
