류시화 시의 대중문학적 속성

Abstract

류시화 시의 대중성을 떠받치는 축은 ‘의사 종교성’과 ‘사랑의 시학’이다. 그는 종교적 구도와 시적 아우라를 결합해내면서, 복합성보다는 단순성, 갈등보다는 화해, 부정적 의식보다는 긍정적 의식을 강조한다. 그래서 갈등을 유발할 수 있는 상황을 배경으로 한다고 하더라도, 그것을 사회적으로 갱신하려 하기보다는 의지나 시선의 변화를 통해 문제를 단순하고 명료하게 그것도 내면적으로 해결할 것을 강조한다. 그만큼 류시화의 언어는 구체성보다는 원초적 친화와 신성한 것으로의 초월을 욕망하는 의사 종교성의 언어이다. 명료하고 투명한 역리(逆理)를 통해 병리적 상황을 진단해주고 그것을 위무하고 치유하고자 하는 그의 언어는, 자신도 이미 해답을 알고는 있지만 큰 타자에게 그것을 확인받고 동시에 위안 받으려는 대중들의 보편적인 종교적 욕망과 친밀하게 부합한다. 또 하나, 류시화 대중성의 비밀은 사랑의 시학에 깃들여 있다. 헌신과 소멸로서의 사랑에 대한 강한 향수가 그러한 대중적 흡인력을 구성한다. 류시화의 사랑 시편들은 대부분의 대중문학들이 견지하는 가벼움과 교양물들이 지니는 무거움 사이를 곡예하듯 아슬아슬한 균형을 유지하며 통과한다. 이후 펼쳐지는 그의 대부분의 베스트셀러 목록들은 한결같이 이러한 연애시의 문법과 속성을 고스란히 함유하고 있고 또 그것을 심미적으로 복제한다. 이러한 류시화의 사랑의 시학 역시 사적(私的) 차원의 연애에서 종교적 차원의 명상과 초월로 한결같이 몸을 바꾼다. 그 점에서 류시화 시편은 ‘시적 언어’가 아니라 ‘종교적 언어’의 결실이다.Two axes supporting popular appeal of Ryu Si-hwa’s poetry are ‘pseudo religiosity’ and ‘poetics of love.’ Combining religious seeking for truth and poetic aura, he emphasizes simplicity than complexity, reconciliation than conflict and positive consciousness than negative consciousness. Also, the secret of Ryu Si-hwa’s popularity is in poetics of love. A strong nostalgia toward love as dedication and extinction constitutes such popular appeal. Narrowly keeping a balance as in acrobatics, love poems of Ryu pass through lightness most popular literature are adhering to and heaviness of books for cultured reading. From then on, most of his bestseller books contain the grammar and characteristics of love poem and aesthetically reproduce them. His poetics of love also consistently transforms from love of individual level to meditation religious level. In this respect, Ryu Si-hwa’s poems are not ‘a poetic language’ but ‘a religious language.’
