다산이 승려에게 준 증언첩(贈言帖)과 교학 방식

Abstract

본고는 다산이 승려 제자들에게 강학의 한 방편으로 써준 5종의 증언첩을 찾아 소개하고 그 교학의 방식을 정리한 글이다. 이 글들은 어떤 이유에서인지 현행 문집에서는 누락되고 없다. 모두 다산의 제자 교육 방식을 보여주는 소중한 자료들이다.다산은 승려들에게 맞춤형 교육의 일환으로 이 증언첩을 직접 써서 주었다. 승려 각 개인의 개성과 처지에 맞춰 바람직한 공부법을 제시하고, 그때마다의 상황에 대해 친절한 처방을 내려주어 학습 동기를 유발코자 했다. 대상이 승려였으므로 표현은 불교적인 것이 많다. 증언의 내용을 보면 받은 사람의 행동 특성과 성품, 그리고 다산이 이끌고자 하는 방향이 선명하게 드러난다.승려에게 준 증언은 모두 우언과 게송, 청언과 선문답의 네 가지 형식으로 크게 구분된다. 첫째, 우언 방식은 일상의 실제 일화에서 끌어와 우화나 우언의 방식으로 전달한다. 생생한 비유를 통해 각성을 촉구한다. 둘째, 게송 방식은 시문이나 불경의 비유를 끌어와 넌지시 깨달음을 유도한다. 셋째, 청언 방식은 함축적인 아포리즘으로 사색과 각성을 이끌어 낸다. 특별히 유학과 불교의 공부가 별개가 아니란 점을 강조하고 있고, 불교를 직접 비판하기도 했다. 넷째, 선문답 방식은 알 듯 모를 듯한 질문을 반복함으로써 대상자를 혼란으로 빠뜨린다. 불교에 대단히 해박했던 다산의 새로운 면모를 확인할 수 있다. 이렇듯 다산은 불문 제자들에게 준 증언을 통해 일상적인 예화와 유쾌한 유머, 촌철살인의 풍자, 유비적(類比的) 사고 등을 전달의 전략으로 다양하게 활용했다.다산은 승려들에게 준 증언을 통해 자신의 불교에 대한 이해를 과시하는 한편, 불가 제자들이 자신의 가르침에 거부감이 들지 않도록 배려했다. 이들 자료는 다산의 불교 이해 수준을 잘 보여준다. 승려들에게 준 증언 자료들은 모두 기존 다산학 연구에서 한 번도 거론되지 않았던 사각지대라는 점에서 본고에서의 정리는 나름의 의미가 적지 않다고 본다. This study introduces five different “words of advice notebooks” (chung’onch’op) written by Tasan Chong Yag-yong (1762-1836) in educating his Buddhist monk disciples, and provides a summary of the pedagogical methods he employed in the task. Oddly, these writings by Tasan have been omitted from currently available collected works volumes; yet the light they shed on Tasan’s pedagogical program makes them invaluable historical sources.As part of Tasan’s program of personalized education tailored to each pupil’s needs, he would create and present to his students individual notebooks full of his words of advice for them. Taking into considering each student’s personality and particular situation, Tasan would offer individualized advice as to the best method of study and, at times, kind advice and encouragement designed to help his disciples master their circumstances and have faith and interest in their studies. As he was writing for monks, Tasan’s vocabulary in these notebooks drew heavily on Buddhist terms and expressions. The contents of these advice notebooks clearly reveal the activities and characteristics of their recipients, as well as the unique directions in which Tasan sought to lead them.Tasan made use of largely four different forms in crafting his words of advice to his monastic disciples: allegories (uon), hymns (kyesong), aphorisms (ch’ong’on), and koan (sonmuntap). The first form, allegories (uon), drew morals or hidden meanings out of true stories of everyday life. They relied on fresh, unique metaphors to bring about new realizations in his pupils. The second, hymns (kyesong), mobilized the metaphors in literature or Buddhist scripture to coax out latents enlightenment. The third form, aphorisms (ch’ong’on), used compact, memorable, and original thoughts to induce contemplation and awakening. In particular, Tasan used this form to stress that Confucian study and Buddhist study were not fundamentally different, and even to level some criticism at Buddhism. Finally, the koan (sonmuntap) form’s deceptively easy, yet devilishly difficult queries befuddled their recipients. Together, these writings reveal a new side of Tasan, as a man well versed in Buddhism, who employed a diverse array of communication strategies ? ranging from everyday parables to delectable humor; from biting satire to allegorical thought ? in advising his monastic pupils.In his words of advice, Tasan displayed not just his deep understanding of Buddhism, but also his consideration toward his monastic disciples, working hard to make his words relatable and relevant, and thus put them at ease with his teachings. It is in fact in this way that these writings reveal just how profoundly learned Tasan was in Buddhism. As these “words of advice” materials have thus far remained utterly unexplored in research on Tasan, this paper aims?in introducing and cataloguing these sources ? to make a substantial contribution to opening a new frontier in the field.
