Abstract
This paper is the anthropogeographical research report on Dongpaljeom section used as the basic route for diplomatic envoy to Beijing for about 600 years. No researches can't clearly identify the history and geography of Dongpaljeom and itinerary and route of diplomatic envoy yet. There are lots of barriers in field research because the section is mountainous area and the roads were changed a lot due to road development, railroad construction, dam construction and stream maintenance. Section II investigated the history of Dongpalcham, change of place names and locations of relay station sites. Through the investigation, the historical geography of Dongpalcham was roughly identified. The envoys to Beijing from the end of Goryeo period used Dongpalcham route, but the environment using the route was not the same all the time. Section III discussed the routing and itinerary of Dongpalcham, change with the times and the meaning of such changes. Accordingly, the geographical features of Dongpalcham were identified. The record of envoy which remains at present contains a number of literary works composed in Dongpalcham route. Those literary works will be investigated in more details in the future. Dongpalcham route has the historic meaning beyond the scope of envoy during Joseon period. The extensive research on the historic meaning requires the approach in long-term aspects.
