Abstract
Previous in-vitro studies to analyze the correlations between the femoral morphology and femoral neck fractures (FNF) have relied on either mechanical testing or finite element methods. However, these methods have not been extensively applied to analyzing the effect of the morphologic variations of femurs. It is mainly due to the lack of various femoral samples from both patients and cadavers, or to the computational limitation in changing the shape of the femoral models. Therefore, we present a novel parametric morphing approach to parameterize a subjectspecific femur using deformation fields. Each field is associated with a geometric parameter, i.e. femoral head diameter, neck diameter, neck length and inclination angle of neck, and is defined regarding to the anatomical and mechanical functions of the femur. By altering the parameters, various finite elemental (FE) models can be achieved from a specific femur. To obtain an analytic explicit model for analyzing the effects of the geometric parameters on FNF, we apply the response surface methodology to the result obtained from the finite element analyses on the achieved FE models. Since we consider the interaction effects among the parameters, the analytic model of FNF may be more reliable in predicting the risk of fractures than the others presented in previous studies. We verify the reliability of our predictive model by comparing with the actual cadaveric experimental results from an in-vitro study. The proposed analytic model may provide a rationale for planning articular surgeries such as total hip arthroplasty (THA).
