1920~30년대 기독교 출판 서적의 양상과 그 시대적 의미

Abstract

이 논문은 기독교가 한국 사회에 미친 영향 중 출판면을 살핀 것이다. 1880년대에 기독교 선교사들이 한국에 입국한 이래 기독교출판서적의 주류는 종교적인 목적의 출판물과 교육을 위한 교과서였다. 하지만 1920~30년대에는 이전과는 달리 사회 문제를 다룬 책들, 개인과 가정의 생활태도를 다룬 책들, 금전의 문제를 다룬 책들이 집중 출판되었다. 새 출판물 유형의 출현은 당시 한국사회와 한국기독교의 상황을 잘 보여주는 것이다. 1920년대 이후 우리나라가 극심한 가난에 시달리게 되자, 기독교측이 이 문제에 무관심하다는 비판이 이어졌다. 때마침 사회주의 사상이 등장하여 기독교를 공격하면서 비판이 심해졌다. 이런동향에 대한 대답이 사회 문제를 다룬 책들로 나타난 것이다. 또 기독교는 금주, 금연, 폐창운동으로 대표되는 절제운동을 벌였다. 금주 운동 등이 negative적인 것이었다면, 기독교는 출판물을 통해 바람직한 생활태도를 적극적으로 안내하는 positive한 방식도 취했음이 드러난 것이다. 또한 기독교에서는 극심한 가난 가운데서 개인을 유혹하는 가장 위험한 요소가 물질적인 문제이며, 이 문제에 대해 바른 태도를 가진다면 그의 전반적인 생활도 변화할 것이라 판단한 것으로 보인다. 돈의 문제를 다룬 출판물이 집중적으로 나타난 것으로 그것을 알 수 있다. 한국 기독교출판물의 역사는 곧 당시 한국출판물의 역사요, 당시 사회의 역사이기도 하다. 그런 면에서 시대마다 드러나는 기독교출판물의 특징을 더 자세히 살필 필요가 있다.Christianity in Korea from 1920 to 1930 has had a significant impact in many areas.
