Abstract
Since corporate social responsibility (CSR) has emerged as the key issue of management, there is growing needs for organizations to strategically pursue the CSR activities. Further, to improve the performance of the activities, it is critical to develop a model that is suitable for the characteristics of a specific industry. The health care industry, which has a large possibility and necessity of CSR activities for improving the health of people and the welfare of society, is the field of insufficient for a systematic analysis of CSR. This paper tries to analyze the CSR programs of CMC, the largest hospital in Korea, and present CMCs CSR framework as a model for benchmarking of other medical corporations. It is argued that pursuing the strategic CSR activities requires to be based on the creating shared value (CSV) perspective. Since the CMC presented the management philosophy of creating the social value, based on religion (Catholic), as well as economic value, this is a suitable business case for creating shared value (CSV). Also, the CMC case shows that the CSV model pursuing both economic value and social value is suitable for applying to the medical corporations (hospitals). Further, in order to achieve successful CSR and CSV, organizations need to develop the education system to share the new value (i.e., social value) with employees in the entire organization and introduce that into human resource management system. This paper conducted a case analysis of CMC CSR program from the CSV perspective, identified a CSV-type benchmarking model considering industry characteristics, and suggested managerial and policy implications.
