This study examines the history and discourses of anti-Kisaeng tourism campaign conducted in the 1970s-80s in South Korea. Kisaeng tourism refers to prostitution tours, the main customers of which were Japanese men. This paper pays particular attention to the politics of representation: how women activists represented the Kisaeng (Korean Geisha, sex workers), and which subject-positions and problematics were emphasized and which were invisualized. It shows that the campaigners evoked or re-invented ‘national tradition’ while criticizing the ‘sexual imperialism’ by Japanese male tourists. Such feminist nationalist discourses depicted campaigners as heroine “mothers” who saved their “daughters” from an immoral father, namely, the dictatorship. At the same time, the discourses naturalized age and class gaps between old middle-class activists and young lower-class sex workers, by describing the latter as daughters and the former as mothers. As a result, the Kisaeng as victimized or fallen daughters were silenced, even in the feminist counter discourses. In order to overcome this limitation, it is necessary to transcend the political imaginary of nationalism, and to seek alternative methods of representation premised on the “ethics of listening.en_US
