기바드 현상과 조건문의 진리조건

Abstract

조건문이 진리값을 갖지 않는다는 점을 보이고자 하는 대표적인 논증 가운데 하나는 이른바 ‘기바드 현상’(the Gibbard phenomenon)에 근거한 기바드 논증이다. 이 글의 목적은 바로 이 논증을 검토해, 기바드 논증이 조건문이 진리값을 갖지 않는다는 결론을 제대로 입증하지 못한다는 점을 보이는 데 있다. 논의 순서는 다음과 같다. 먼저 기바드 현상에 근거한 기바드 논증의 구조를 분명하게 할 것이다. 그런 다음 기바드 논증을 부정하고자 하는 기존의 방안들을 살펴보고, 그것들은 나름의 문제점을 지니고 있다는 점을 보일 것이다. 이어 기바드 현상을 설명하는 새로운 방안을 제시함으로써 기바드 논증이 성공적이지 않음을 보일 것이다.The Gibbard argument is one of the main arguments by which it is intended to show that indicative conditionals do not have truth-values. In this paper I would like to show that the argument fails. For this I make it clear the structure of the Gibbard argument first. Then I examine if all the premises of the argument hold good. I agree with Gibbard that he two conditionals in question can’t both be false, nor can it be that just one of them is true. But I will show that contra Gibbard, the two conditional can both be true, so the argument does not succeed.
