거주지역의 외국인 비중이 외국인에 대한 사회적 거리감에 미치는 영향

Abstract

이 연구는 거주지역의 인종구성이 외국인에 대한 한국인의 사회적 거리감에 미치는 영향을 살펴보는 것을 주요 목적으로 한다. 아울러 한국인의 사회적 거리감을 인종집단별로 측정하였을 때, 인종구성의 영향이 상이하게 나타나는지 여부도 검증한다. 인종구성은 전국 251개 시·군·구 지역을 대상으로 전체 주민등록인구수에 대한 외국인 주민 수의 비로 산출하여 분석에 활용하였다. 이 연구는 외국인에 대한 한국인의 사회적 거리감에 성별, 연령, 혼인상태, 교육수준, 직업, 가구소득, 거주지역의 도시화정도, 그리고 거주지역의 외국인 비중이 미치는 영향을 분석하는 것에 초점을 맞추었다. 분석에는 2010년 한국종합사회조사의 원자료와 2009년 지자체 외국인주민 통계자료, 주민등록인구 통계 및 인구밀도 관련 자료가 활용되었다. 분석 결과, 거주지역의 외국인 비중이 외국인에 대한 사회적 거리감에 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 거주지역의 외국인 비중이 높아질수록 한국인은 외국인에 대해 배타적인 태도를 가지게 되는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 한국인의 사회적 거리감은 외국인 인종집단에 따라 상이한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 거주지역의 외국인 비중이 높아질수록, 한국인은 중국 조선족, 중국 한족, 동남아시아인과 일본인에 대해 부정적인 태도를 가지는 것으로 확인되었다. 그러나 북한 이탈주민, 미국인과 유럽인에 대해서는 이러한 경향이 발견되지 않았다.The main objective of this paper is to examine the effects of foreign population size on Korean attitudes toward foreigners and heterogeneity of its effect according to the foreigner’s ethnic group. This study hypothesizes that perceptions of threat posed by a larger size of foreign population in a county are likely to increase Korean negative attitudes toward foreigners. Micro-data from the 2010 Korean General Survey and municipal data of foreign residents and Korean citizens in 2009 are analyzed. The effects of the foreign population’s perceptible size on Korean attitudes toward foreigners vary depending on the foreigner’s ethnic group. The primary result in this study shows that greater size of foreign population in a county tends to have more negative effects on Korean acceptance toward ethnic Koreans from China, Han Chinese, Southeast Asians, and Japanese in comparison to the result that foreign population size has a statistically insignificant effect on Korean attitudes toward North Korean defectors, North Americans and Europeans.
