어간말 ‘ㄹ’ 교체 현상과 [±continuant]에 대한 연구

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 국어의 어간말 ``ㄹ``교체에서 보이는 불규칙성의 원인을 [±continuant] 자질로 접근해서 해결하는 것이다. 여기에서 말하는 ``ㄹ``교체 현상이란 ``ㄷ``불규칙 용언의 활용과 ``ㄹ``탈락 현상이다. 이처럼 ``ㄹ``과 관련하여 나타나는 ``ㄷ불규칙, ㄹ 탈락``의 현상을 분석해 보면, 표면적으로 서로 관련이 없어 보이지만, ``ㄹ``에 관련된 현상이라는 측면에서 통합적으로 설명이 가능하다고 본다. 그 근거는 바로``ㄹ``이[±continuant]라는 자질을 갖고 있다고 보기 때문이다. 하나는 자음처럼 [-continuant] 자질을 갖고 있고, 다른 하나는 모음처럼 [+continuant] 자질을 갖고있어서 ``ㄹ``과 관련한 음운현상이 이중적으로 나타난다는 것이다. 그러나 이러한 불투명한 모습을 일으키는 원인에 대해서는 아직까지 명확하게 논의된 적이 없었다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 이러한 ``ㄹ``의 이중적 모습이 [±continuant] 자질에서 비롯되었음을 논의하고자 한다.The purpose of this paper is to explain the principle of selective application that irregular verb stem-final ``t`` and liquid deletion are applied in conjugation in Korean. In the conjugation, I propose a new approach to the understanding of the ambivalent status of the feature [±continuant] of /l/, whose value is not universally accepted. In appealing to recent insights on the internal structure of the segment, namely the articulator group hypothesis and liquid geometry, this work sheds new light on several long-standing recalcitrant issues in Korean phonology specifically, including irregular verb stem-final ``t`` and liquid deletion, and phonological theory more generally, and promises much for analyses of others where /l/`s behavior with regard to [±continuant] has been seen as ambivalent or contradictory in the past. In this paper. I present the data of the first part of the paper, the selective application of Korean, and lay out my theoretical assumptions regarding the articulator group hypothesis and liquid geometry. I show how applying the proposed liquid geometry to Korean allows us to resolve the issue of the selective application, and I review previous accounts. I discuss further implications for the treatment of several historical changes, including lateralization of [r]. Finally, I offer concluding remarks.
